Abscess / Injuries
Injuries are often caused by fighting, objects in the terrarium or humans and other pets. Search if possible first off what the cause of it is so that it can be removed.
Abscess:
An abscess is a pus accumulation, usually caused by a bacterial infection. When bacteria or foreign objects (Corpus alienum) invade healthy tissue, infection spreads through tissue. Some cells die and fall, which they leave space where moisture and infected cells can accumulate. White blood cells, the defenders of the body against infection, move to these places and after they die, the bacteria have taken them off. The dead white blood cells accumulate and fill the tissue with pus-pus-like, a creamy substance. The body tries this strange object (bacterium) than defuse, to encapsulate the with connective tissue and fibrin. Because the abscess grows tissue damage can occur and may have more infections. The pus may eventually end up in the blood and so there can be blood poisoning. This must therefore be treated by a veterinarian. Very small abscesses are possibly self treat. They should then be opened, rinsed clean and disinfected. If the pus is removed they usually heal quickly. (Abscesses may often fail to heal up quickly. The wound must first completely clean, free of pus and evt. foreign objects. Otherwise the bacteria embedded in the body and arise again the abscess again.)
Injuries / Flesh wounds:
Most common injuries are bitten off tails and toes, usually because of a brawl between 2 males. (The tail grows no more to as with e.g. a Leopard Gecko) Many injuries happen accidentally because the animals for food to see each other's cloves or pigtails. Start by cleaning the wound with a wet cotton swab and if there is a lot of dirt in it, keep the animal than with the injury in a small layer of lukewarm soda water. Then there may be some liquid betadine/iodine (disinfectant) on the wound needs to be done with a cotton swab. If the wound continues to ignite after a few days, don't hesitate and go to the vet. There is then a pretty big chance that your lizard will develop itself further inflammation are and that he then blood poisoning. Here they end up dead. Stuck at half tails and toes, go straight to the vet, that can amputate and attach neatly, do not pull itself to sit! At injuries with serious bleeding is also advisable to go straight to the vet.
